Cardiac Screening for Fitness and Sports Enthusiasts

As a keen fitness enthusiast myself, I fully support all forms of physical activity. However, I also have a responsibility to raise awareness about certain scenarios where intense exercise or competitive training can place excessive strain on the heart, potentially leading to harmful consequences.

These scenarios typically fall into two categories:

  • 1. A healthy individual developing a heart or blood pressure-related condition during intensive training for a competitive sport.
  • 2. An individual with an undiagnosed heart condition unknowingly putting their heart under stress by participating in intense physical activity, which may lead to the manifestation of symptoms or complications.

My guiding principle is that prevention is the best cure. That’s why I place strong emphasis on proactive screening for heart disease—especially before you begin training for any form of competitive sport or endurance event.

If you are planning to take up a competitive sport or are preparing for a full marathon this year, I recommend scheduling a comprehensive cardiac evaluation. I’ll work closely with your coach or trainer and consult with other specialists to devise the safest and most effective plan tailored to your goals and health status.
